Falling Down

For some reason, I've had a hard time accessing my blog to post an update. Maybe Blogger does not approve of the quality of my recent posts?

Anyway, I've been meaning to add some pictures from our recent trip to Niagara Falls.

The top 2 pictures, taken from our hotel room, are of the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side. The pictures do not do justice to the size and majesty of the waterfall. We were able to see it "up close" on the Maid of the Mist as well as get a "behind the scene view" of the cascading water by visiting a tunnel cut into the rock surface behind Horseshoe Falls.

The third picture from the top shows the tourist boat Maid of the Mist (there are actually several, some operated by the US and some - larger boats - operated by Canada. We sailed on one of the Canadian boats.

Note the rocks on the bottom of the waterfall. As the rock erodes by the force of the water, it breaks away and crumbles. Next year the US plans to temporarily stop flow of the US waterfalls to "clean up" the scene. An earlier attempt to do this was halted when preservationists realized the fallen rocks actually helped prevent, or slow up, the inevitable decay. The Falls have been eroding continually, and in 1200 years or so they will be completely gone.

The fourth picture from the top is of the American Falls; the smaller waterfall on the right is called Bridal Veil Falls.

The water flows from Lake Erie over the Falls and continues down the Niagara River to Lake Ontario.

Can't wait to get back. Next time I hope we get to visit some of the nearby Canadian towns and vineyards.
