Yesterday was the last day of publication of the Rocky Mountain News. While Denver still (at least for awhile) has the Denver Post, it is sad that the Rocky is gone, 55 days short of 150 years of operation.
Many storied daily newspapers are in financial trouble across the country. In response to a downturn in financial stability, to save money many papers (including the Harrisburg Patriot-News and the New York Times) have said goodbye to long-time and capable reporters. Sadly, by losing good reporters and cutting staffs, newspapers become less of a resource to the community they serve.
Hopefully the ways and means will be found to maintain at least one newspaper per city and town, as they are important instruments to keep the public informed through investigative reporting.
