Wallander

By happenstance, on our recent flight to Sweden I watched part of Wallander, a movie based on the exploits of a Swedish police detective of the same name. While I only caught the end of the movie, I thought it was well-done and superbly acted. The lead role was played by the great Irish-born actor Kenneth Branagh.

I was surprised to learn a few weeks later that Wallander includes several stories based on the writings of Henning Mankell; PBS is airing three episodes (including the one I' only partially seen during my flight to Sweden) this summer. Three more are planned for next year.

I've started to read Mankell's The Man Who Smiled and find it a great read. Now I have a Swedish crime novelist to match Elmore Leonard.
