Janet and I enjoyed watching the Preakness Stakes today. No horses were injured and Big Brown won the second leg of the Triple Crown. We're hoping he wins the Belmont Stakes in June, as there has been no Triple Crown winner in 30 years.
Sadly, many thoroughbred racehorses are sold for slaughter after their racing days are over.
The domestic slaughtering of racehorses has been banned by law, but many horses are shipped to Mexico, where they are killed in cruel methods and butchered to provide meat for pet food and humans (in foreign markets).
Larry Craig, Utah's censored Senator, has stalled federal legislation to ban selling horses for such purposes.
There are a number of people involved in rescuing horses from a cruel fate. More power to them.
