Sicko

Janet and I celebrated the 4th by seeing Michael Moore's new documentary, Sicko, with a friend.

While Moore perhaps paints an overly rosy picture of universal health coverage in Canada, Cuba and France, he does make a strong case for the shortcomings of American health care. It will be a shame if another year goes by without significant change for the better.

Kaiser Permanente did not fare very well in the film. Moore traces HMOs back to the Nixon Administration, when, surprisingly (???), the prospect of making profits at the expense of the sick was looked upon favorably by a Republican Administration.

Another question posed in the film; why we have to denigrate countries such as France and Cuba when we should more appropriately acknowledge the general goodwill the French and Cuban have for us.
